What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy is a modern, non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. By targeting areas of damaged tissue, it helps to improve blood flow, reduce pain, and accelerate repair, particularly in stubborn conditions where traditional physiotherapy alone may not have achieved full results.
During treatment, the handheld device delivers gentle pulses to the affected area; most people describe the sensation as a tapping or pulsing feeling, which can be easily adjusted to ensure comfort. Sessions are short, and there is no need for medication, injections, or surgery. Backed by strong clinical research, Shockwave Therapy is widely recognised as a safe, effective, and well-tolerated option that supports recovery and helps patients return to their normal activities with ease and confidence.

I can’t recommend Matt Highly enough, I had ongoing plantar fascia foot pain and a tendon related hip problem and he has explained how and why I have suffered with these issues, he has guided me on how I can continue to play basketball and treated with the most up to date techniques in the form of shockwave therapy, which has been amazing, this combined with specific exercises have not only helped cure these issues but also improved my performance as a player.
Following hip surgery last year, I developed inflammation of the tendon in my hip/leg and was recommended shockwave therapy. Having been referred to Matt at Complete Physio, I underwent a course of shockwave treatment which significantly reduced my pain levels and increased my mobility. I hadn't heard of shockwave treatment before but it's brilliantly effective, and would highly recommend it. Thanks Matt for all your work, it's made a huge difference!
I had been suffering from Planta Fasciitis for 18 months, affecting my general mobility and running. I wasn't aware of any effective treatment available until I mentioned it to Matt Taylor, he excitedly explained about Shock Therapy and how, if treated properly, it can treat and remove the pain very effectively. I had 8 sessions via my WPA Health Insurance (they're also registered with BUPA + others) and after the third session I noticed the pain had disappeared almost completely! The treatment was easy and Matt explained it at every stage. I had some very basic exercises to do in between treatment sessions and now I need to do them a couple of times a week, very easy though. The science is sound and now I can walk and run with no pain at all! I'd thoroughly recommend the treatment and the Complete Physio Clinic, they've never let me down 👍👍👍👍
Shockwave therapy has changed my life. Matt has successfully treated plantar fasciitis which I’ve had in my left foot for nearly two years and which had not improved with conventional physio. I have no idea what caused my injury. I am in my fifties, spend a lot of time on my feet at work and I like to walk recreationally every day. When referred by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, my pain level was at 7 or 8, especially in the morning. I hobbled more than walked. There are now long periods each day where I am completely pain free - and I anticipate this getting even better over the coming weeks as this is the usual experience. I strongly recommend that anyone with a tendon injury which is not improving explores shockwave therapy as, in my experience, it really works! As I understand, the earlier you seek treatment, the better the outcome and that it is best to check it out before agreeing to injections. I don’t understand why this therapy isn’t much more widely known as it’s a game changer. On a personal level, Matt’s calm and professional manner and clear knowledge and skill in treating tendon injuries gave me great confidence and reassurance. He guided me through the treatment at all stages, answering all my questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions can Shockwave Therapy treat?
Shockwave therapy is ideal for stubborn, long-term tendon-based injuries that haven’t improved with rest or standard physiotherapy. At FIX Physio, we use it to treat:
- Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Tennis & golfer’s elbow
- Patellar tendinopathy (“jumper’s knee”)
- Shoulder calcific tendinopathy
- Hip & gluteal pain (including greater trochanteric pain syndrome)
- Other tendon or soft-tissue injuries that have become chronic
Does Shockwave Therapy hurt?
Most people find the treatment very tolerable. You may feel a tapping or pulsing sensation over the area, which can be a little uncomfortable at first, but your physiotherapist will adjust the settings to keep you comfortable. Any mild soreness afterwards usually settles within a day or two.
How many sessions will I need?
Most people need 3–5 sessions, spaced about one week apart. Your physiotherapist will review your progress after each session and adjust your treatment plan if needed.
Is Shockwave Therapy safe?
Yes, shockwave therapy is a very safe, non-invasive treatment backed by research and used widely in sports medicine and physiotherapy clinics. Our team is specially trained to ensure it’s delivered safely and effectively.
How quickly will I see results?
Some patients notice improvement after just one or two sessions, while others feel the biggest difference several weeks after completing the full course. The treatment stimulates your body’s natural healing response, so results continue to build over time.
Can Shockwave Therapy be combined with physiotherapy?
Indeed, combining shockwave therapy with tailored physiotherapy exercises often yields the best results. We’ll design a complete plan that supports tissue healing, restores strength, and helps prevent the problem from coming back.
