ACL injuries treatment at FIX Physio

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the key stabilising ligaments in the knee and is commonly injured in sports or activities that involve sudden stops, pivoting, or changes in direction. An ACL injury can range from a mild sprain to a complete tear, often resulting in pain, swelling, instability, and reduced mobility. These injuries can be particularly frustrating for active individuals and athletes due to the impact on physical performance and the need for a structured recovery plan. Early diagnosis and appropriate rehabilitation are essential for a full recovery and long-term knee health.

Common causes:

  • Sudden change of direction while running
  • Pivoting on a planted foot
  • Landing awkwardly from a jump
  • Direct collision or trauma to the knee

Treatments:

Physiotherapy for ACL injuries may begin before surgery (prehab) to prepare the knee and improve post-op outcomes. Post-surgery or conservative (non-surgical) treatment focuses on restoring joint stability, reducing swelling, regaining range of motion, and building strength through progressive rehab. Return-to-sport training is also included to safely reintroduce dynamic movements and minimise the risk of reinjury.
